Mini golf rules, for people who have never played

There is less to learn than you think. The scoring is the only part anyone gets wrong, and even that is handled for you.

Mini golf has a reputation for being simple, which it is, and for having rules nobody actually knows, which is also true. The good news is that the entire game fits in a paragraph, and the one fiddly part, keeping score, is done for you.

The whole game in one paragraph

Each hole starts from a marked tee area. You putt the ball toward the cup. Every time you hit the ball, that is one stroke. When the ball drops in the cup, the hole is over and your score for that hole is the number of strokes it took. Lowest total across all nine holes wins. That is it.

The three rules people argue about

  1. If the ball leaves the course, place it back where it went out and add one stroke. No throwing.
  2. If the ball stops against a wall, play it where it lies. Nudging it is not a free move.
  3. Most courses cap a hole at six strokes. If you are still going, pick it up, take the six, and keep the group moving.
The cap exists so one bad hole does not turn into a twenty-minute standoff while four people watch.

How long a round takes

About 45 minutes for one 9-hole course. Both courses back to back is roughly 90 minutes of golf, which is usually the point at which somebody suggests food. New slots open every 15 minutes through the day, so groups can follow each other round rather than all crowding one hole.

The scorecard is digital

You do not need a pencil and nobody has to do the maths. Scores are tracked digitally as you play, which removes the single most common source of mini golf disputes: the person who insists they took three when everyone watched them take five.

What it costs

One 9-hole course is ₹899 per person. Both courses together are ₹1,099, which is cheaper than paying for the two separately. Anyone can play, at any age, and there is genuinely no skill requirement.

Two themed courses, one roof, no windmills.
